Milan, April 2019 – PORADA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2019, the new edition of the international competition, is focused this year on different types of Sideboards and Cupboards. The challenge is to interpret the values and identity of Porada, leading brand of Italian design, through the creation of innovative concepts for different types of sideboards and cupboards, in which the use of solid wood is prevalent (but not necessarily exclusive).

Promoted by Porada Arredi srl, a leading company in the production of furnishing accessories, and POLI.design, under the patronage of ADI, the Association for Industrial Design, the competition is open to Italian and foreign designers and creative people (individuals or groups), professionals or non-professionals, corporate employees and students. Innovation, originality and search for new design solutions for woodworking processes: these are the guidelines of the challenge.

The new call is officially launched during the Milan Design Week 2019, as part of the award ceremony for the winning projects of the seventh edition of the competition, at PORADA's Showroom (Via Borgospesso n.18, 20121 Milano) on April 11th. The 2018 contest, dedicated to innovative solutions of writing desks and coiffeuse, raised a total of 336 applications from around the world (Australia, Japan, Iran, South America, Eastern Europe and Turkey are among the countries that took part) and saw the recognition of seven projects that stood out for their quality.

In the Professional category the winner project is "Screen" created by designer Simone Alberto Gerbino, a solution that finds its peculiar characteristic in the three shelves, free and independently rotatable from each other. A "game element" that can be transformed according to the user's needs.

Nicole Maccari and Serena Chillè, students of the Politecnico di Milano, were awarded the first prize in the Students category with Noua, a coffee table with a built-in removable tray with the double function of emptying-pockets, thanks to a section carved below the tray, and magazine rack, thanks to a folded sheet of metal, which also acts as a support for the entire table.

Projects relating to the 2019 edition must be original and unpublished; they must enhance the use of production technologies and woodworking processes and typical finishing of the solid wood.
The projects should also comply with specific functionality, with the current safety standards, with ergonomic characteristics, with both environmental and sustainable design characteristics.

Wood, whether in natural-finish, preferably in finishes prevalently used by the company, or painted, can be combined with metal, mirrors, crystals, leather, hides or fabric.

A jury composed of renowned experts in the field will judge and select the winning projects. In evaluating the entries, the judges will take into account: their originality, the level of innovation and pursuit of new design solutions related to the processes typically used for solid wood, experimentation with materials and surface finishes, the capacity of projects to define and anticipate scenarios of use and innovative concepts in the use of wooden furniture and contemporary furnishings, with particular regard to typological, technological and morphological decisions.

The jury will choose three winners for each of the two categories (Students and Professionals) in the competition, who will receive their awards at a dedicated event.
The total prize money of € 10.000 will be allocated as follows:

PROFESSIONAL Category:
1st prize: € 3.000
2nd prize: € 2.000
3rd prize: € 1.000

STUDENT Category:
1st prize: € 2.000
2nd prize: € 1.200
3rd prize: € 800

The winning projects of the competition will also be prototyped and possibly produced by Porada at a later stage.
