Milan, March 2023 – Mirrors will be the protagonists of the PORADA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2023, the international competition of ideas promoted by Porada, leading brand of Italian design, and POLI.design, founded by Politecnico di Milano, under the patronage of ADI - the Association for Industrial Design.

Originality, innovation and research of new design solutions referred to the typical processing of solid wood are the guidelines that will inspire designers who will decide to participate and interpret the values and identity of Porada, the leading brand of Italian design. The goal of this new edition that is open to Italian and foreign designers and creative people (individuals or groups), professionals or non-professionals, corporate employees and students, is to identify new innovative concepts on different types of Mirrors, in which the use of solid wood is prevalent, although not necessarily exclusive, and which convey the values and the identity of the Porada brand.

The numbers of the competition have now become significant: in the last edition 282 applications from all over the world were submitted to the judging panel, including 143 in the professional category and 139 in the student category. Numerous entries from Italy, and equally positive response at the international level: Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Spain, France, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, Japan, China, Ukraine, Germany, Argentina, the USA, the UK, Thailand and Cuba are just some of the many nations involved.

Winning the competition for the Professional category was Niccolò Devetag with the project "Ginkgo", an armchair inspired by the forms of nature with the aim of expressing an innovative proposal in this type of furniture. Benedetta Rocchi, a Product and Interior design student at the Academy of Arts and New Technologies in Rome, on the other hand, won the Student category prize with "Xenia". From the desire to recreate a sense of welcome and thus warmth takes shape the design of the armchair, a protective shell that recalls the organic nature.

The 2023 edition aims at the identification of new innovative concepts on the different types of MIRRORS (table, wall, wall mirror, mirror, structure or furnishing accessory, free-standing or incorporated in a piece of furniture, whose dominant element is a reflective surface), in which the use of solid wood is prevalent (but not necessarily exclusive) and which conveys the values and identity of the Porada brand. The solutions must be original and novel and aimed at enhancing the use of production technologies and processes of processing and ennobling typical of solid wood workmanship and must take into account, in addition to compliance with specific functionality, compliance with current safety regulations, compliance with ergonomic requirements and attention to environmental and sustainable design requirements. Wood, in natural wood, preferably from those in the company's predominant use, or lacquered, may be combined with metal, glass and other materials.

A jury composed of renowned experts in the field will judge and select the winning projects. In evaluating the entries, the judges will take into account: their originality, the level of innovation and research of new design solutions referred to the typical processing of solid wood, the experimentation on materials and surface finishes, the ability of the projects to define and anticipate scenarios of use and innovative concepts in the use of wood furniture and contemporary furnishing accessories, with particular regard to typological, technological and morphological determinations.

The jury will choose three winners for each of the two categories (Students and Professionals) in the competition, who will receive their awards at a dedicated event.
The total prize money of € 11.000 will be allocated as follows:

PROFESSIONAL Category:
1st prize: € 3.000
2nd prize: € 2.000
3rd prize: € 1.000

STUDENT Category:
1st prize: € 2.000
2nd prize: € 1.200
3rd prize: € 800

Starting from this edition it is also established the "Special Mention Giacomo Allievi" prize of the economic value of € 1,000 assignable to 1 student or 1 professional. The project will be selected by a dedicated jury that will choose the project that, among the others, will most distinguish itself for the best balance between artisanal tradition associated with woodworking and modern design expressed in the structural and creative development of the project.
