Milan, July 2020 – The deadline to participate at the IX edition of the international competition of ideas PORADA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2020, promoted by Porada, leading brand of Italian design, and POLI.design, with the patronage of ADI, the Association for Industrial Design, has been postponed to October 2021. The decision was made by the company following the postponement of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2020 edition, in Milan, the most important event worldwide in the design sector. The challenge will continue to be the same: being able to interpret the values and identity of Porada, a leading brand of Italian design, through the creation of chairs. Italian and foreign designers and creatives, freelancers or employees, students or professionals (individually or in groups) are invited to create innovative chair concepts in which the use of solid wood is prevalent (but not necessarily exclusive). The solutions must be original and unprecedented and aimed at enhancing the use of production technologies and manufacturing processes typical of solid wood. They must also consider compliance with specific functionality, compliance with current safety regulations, ergonomic requirements and attention to environmental issues, and sustainable design. The wood, in natural essence, preferably among those mainly used by the company, or lacquered, can be combined with metal, leather, leatherette, or fabrics.
The numbers of the competition have become important: 316 projects dedicated to the creation of different types of sideboards and cupboards were presented to the jury in the latest edition, 222 of which applied to the Professional category and 94 to the Student category. Numerous adhesions from Italy, but equally positive the international response: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Japan, Jordan, Turkey, Thailand, are just some of the nations involved. Six winners - three in the Professional category and three in the Student category - have been able to grasp the spirit of the competition by proposing innovative and original projects.
A jury composed of renowned experts in the field will review and select the winning projects. When evaluating the designs submitted, the judges will consider: the originality, the degree of innovation and the pursuit of new design solutions related to the processes typical of solid wood, the research and implementation of materials and surface finishes, the ability of projects to define and anticipate scenarios and innovative concepts of usage of wooden contemporary furniture, with particular regard to typological, technological and morphological decisions.
The jury will choose three winners for each of the two categories (Students and Professionals) in the competition, who will receive their awards at a dedicated event.
The prize total amount of € 10.000 will be allocated as follows:
1st prize: € 3.000
2nd prize: € 2.000
3rd prize: € 1.000
1st prize: € 2.000
2nd prize: € 1.200
3rd prize: € 800
The winning projects can also be prototyped and possibly produced by Porada at a later stage. The projects must be submitted no later than October 15th, 2021.
